IFC Model Checker vs IFC Viewer: What's the Difference?
Checkers validate data against rules and produce a quality score. Viewers render geometry and let you browse properties. Here is how to know which one your workflow needs — and when you need both.
IFC Model Checker vs IFC Viewer: What's the Difference? — IFC Viewer Online article cover
The Core Distinction
The confusion between viewers and checkers comes from the fact that many tools do both — you can view a model and check it in the same interface. But the underlying functions are completely different:
IFC Viewer
- Renders 3D geometry in browser or desktop
- Click elements to browse property sets
- Supports section cuts, measurements, annotations
- Used for visual coordination and design review
- Output: visual inspection, BCF markups, comments
- Cannot detect duplicate GUIDs
- Cannot verify property set completeness
- Cannot validate IDS requirements
IFC Model Checker
- Parses the IFC data graph and validates against rules
- Checks 44+ quality rules: GUIDs, hierarchy, Psets, geometry
- Validates IDS 1.0 requirements against project specifications
- Produces a Health Score (0–100) for delivery gating
- Output: structured report, JSON/CSV export, audit trail
- Identifies every duplicate GUID in the file
- Verifies Pset completeness across all element types
- Validates IDS facets: entity, attribute, property, classification
Four Tool Categories in the IFC Ecosystem
The IFC tooling landscape uses four distinct terms, often interchangeably. Here is what each one means precisely:
| Category | What it does | What it does NOT do | Examples |
|---|
| IFC Viewer | Renders 3D geometry, property browser, section cuts, measurements | Quality rule checking, Health Score, IDS validation | Autodesk Viewer, Trimble Connect, Dalux, usBIM.viewer+ |
| IFC Validator (strict) | Schema and EXPRESS validation (Level 1 only) | Quality rules (L2), IDS requirements (L3) | buildingSMART Validation Service, IfcOpenShell ifcvalidate |
| IFC Model Checker | L1 + L2 quality rules (44 rules, Health Score) | IDS unless explicitly included | IFC Viewer Online (L1+L2+L3), Solibri, BIMcollab Zoom |
| IDS Tool | Validates model against IDS 1.0 specification files | General quality rules beyond IDS scope | IFC Viewer Online, buildingSMART Validator, IfcTester |
Four IFC tool categories — what they check and what they do not.
When You Need a Viewer
- Visual coordination and clash review meetings
- Client presentations and design review
- On-site model access for contractors
- Creating BCF markups for RFIs and design comments
- Checking geometric fit and spatial relationships visually
- Property browsing during design development
When You Need a Checker
- Before uploading a model to the CDE
- At each design stage gate in an ISO 19650 workflow
- Before combining discipline models for clash detection
- Before formal submission to the client or FM
- When receiving a model from a subcontractor or consultant
- When validating against a project IDS specification
Decision Tree: Which Tool Do You Need?
What is your goal?
│
├─ See the model geometry / navigate 3D
│ └─ You need a VIEWER
│ ├─ Free, browser-based: IFC Viewer Online, Autodesk Viewer
│ └─ Desktop: BIMVision, Trimble Connect desktop
│
├─ Confirm the file is valid IFC (schema)
│ └─ You need a VALIDATOR (L1)
│ ├─ buildingSMART Validation Service (online)
│ └─ IFC Viewer Online (L1 runs automatically on open)
│
├─ Confirm the model is quality-ready for delivery
│ └─ You need a CHECKER (L1 + L2)
│ ├─ IFC Viewer Online (browser-local, free, Health Score)
│ └─ Solibri (deeper rule sets, subscription)
│
├─ Validate against project-specific data requirements
│ └─ You need an IDS TOOL (L3)
│ ├─ IFC Viewer Online (full IDS 1.0 support)
│ └─ buildingSMART Validation Service
│
└─ All of the above in one workflow
└─ IFC Viewer Online (viewer + L1 + L2 + L3 + Health Score)

Common Misconceptions
"My viewer validates IFC"
If a viewer can open the file without crashing, it does not mean the file is valid. Viewers are tolerant — they skip what they cannot render. A checker is strict by design.
"Schema validation is enough"
L1 schema validation confirms the file structure is parseable. A schema-valid file can still have hundreds of duplicate GUIDs, missing Psets, and broken hierarchy.
"IDS covers quality rules"
IDS validates project-specific requirements. It does not check general quality: whether all elements have valid GUIDs, storeys are correctly structured, or geometry is sound.
"Any score makes it a checker"
Some tools show a completeness percentage based on a sample. A genuine L2 checker applies the same 44 rules to every element in the file with severity-weighted penalties.
Workflow Integration: Viewer and Checker Together
- Author exports IFC → checker runs L1+L2+L3 → errors returned to author for fixing.
- Fixed model re-exported → checker confirms Health Score ≥ threshold → model admitted to CDE.
- In the CDE, coordination team opens model in viewer → visual review, BCF markups, clash detection.
- Before formal submission → checker re-run → report archived as conformance evidence.
A viewer tells you what the model looks like. A checker tells you whether the data is correct. Both questions matter — at different points in the delivery workflow.
