What Makes an IFC Checker a Real Checker?
Before comparing tools, it is worth being precise about what "checking" means. The three validation levels determine whether a tool is a checker or a viewer with checking marketing:
- L1 (schema) — every tool that successfully opens an IFC file implicitly performs L1 validation. This is not a differentiator.
- L2 (quality rules) — 44 rules covering GUIDs, spatial hierarchy, Pset completeness, geometry, naming, and relationships. This is the real checker function.
- L3 (IDS) — validates the model against a project-specific IDS 1.0 specification. This is the requirements compliance function.
A tool that does L1 only and calls itself a checker is misleading you. The rest of this article uses L1/L2/L3 clearly for each tool.

IFC Viewer Online is a browser-based tool that combines a full 3D viewer with all three validation levels. Files are processed locally using WebAssembly — nothing is uploaded to a server. The L2 engine applies 44 quality rules and produces a Health Score (0–100) that can be used directly as a delivery gate. IDS 1.0 is fully supported across all six facets.

2. Solibri
Solibri is the market leader in deep IFC rule checking. Its rule engine allows BIM managers to define project-specific checks beyond the standard quality rules — covering coordination, regulatory compliance, and spatial validation at a level no free tool currently matches. The learning curve is steep and the cost significant, but for large infrastructure or commercial projects, the depth is genuine.

BIMVision is a capable free IFC viewer from Datacomp that has been widely used in the Central and Eastern European market. It includes basic property browsing and some Pset inspection capability, but it is not a model checker in the L2/L3 sense. There is no quality rule engine, no Health Score, and no IDS validation. The paid version adds features like BCF and IFC federation.

4. Trimble Connect

It does not apply quality rules to the IFC data layer and produces no quality report. It is excellent for what it is: a cloud-hosted coordination and document management platform.
5. Dalux
Dalux is a strong construction platform for on-site use with good IFC viewing capabilities on mobile and desktop. Like Trimble Connect, it is not a model checker — there is no L2 quality rule engine. Its strength is in construction phase workflows: site checklists, RFIs, and document management. The IFC viewing component is excellent for site personnel who need to access the model without a BIM specialist present.
6. Autodesk Viewer (Autodesk Docs)
Autodesk Viewer (embedded in Autodesk Docs / BIM 360) renders IFC files uploaded to the Autodesk cloud. It provides good property browsing and supports most IFC4 entities. There is no quality rule checking, no Health Score, and no IDS support. Files must be uploaded to Autodesk servers — a consideration for confidential projects. As a viewer it is polished; as a checker it does not exist.
7. That Open Viewer (ThatOpenCompany)
That Open Viewer is an open-source browser-based IFC viewer built on the ThatOpen engine (formerly IFC.js). It is actively developed and has growing community adoption. As of mid-2026, checking features are in the roadmap but not implemented — it is a viewer with good developer extensibility. Worth watching for teams with development resources who want to build custom checking on top of the OSS engine.
8. buildingSMART Validation Service
The buildingSMART Validation Service is the official online validator maintained by the IFC standard body. It has authoritative L1 schema validation and solid IDS 1.0 support. What it lacks is L2 quality rules, a Health Score, and a 3D viewer. It is the right tool for formally certifying IDS conformance (particularly useful when submitting to public sector clients who require bSI-certified validation), but not for day-to-day quality checking.
